Peer-to-peer exchange on the environmental performance assessment tool between FIRA and FINAGRO

On November 15, 2024, FIRA from Mexico and FINAGRO from Colombia participated in an exchange organized by the Agri-PDB Platform with support from AFD. This event highlighted the power of collaboration to develop tools that promote sustainable agricultural finance, aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Peer-to-Peer Exchange between FIRA and FINAGRO on Environmental Evaluation

On November 15, 2024, a significant peer-to-peer exchange took place between FIRA (Fideicomisos Instituidos en Relación con la Agricultura) from Mexico and FINAGRO (Fondo para el Financiamiento del Sector Agropecuario) from Colombia. This event, organized by the Agri-PDB Platform with support from AFD (Agence Française de Développement), was an exemplary collaboration to share experiences and innovations in evaluating the environmental and climate impacts of agricultural investments.

During the exchange, both institutions discussed the development and application of a parametric tool designed to measure the sustainability of credit portfolios. This tool, developed in collaboration by FIRA with AFD, Carbon Trust, CIRAD, and El Buen Socio, allows investments to be classified, environmental impacts to be estimated, and institutions’ practices to be aligned with international standards such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). FINAGRO contributed valuable insights from its experience with similar methodologies applied to renewable energy and agricultural value chains.

Among the key discussion points was the classification of investment concepts into categories such as energy efficiency, environmentally sustainable agriculture, efficient water use, and renewable energy. Additionally, the tool’s ability to provide portfolio-level impact assessments, promoting transparency and improving reputation in sustainable financing, was highlighted.

This exchange demonstrated the potential of regional and international collaboration to strengthen the role of public development banks in sustainable agricultural financing. By integrating local data sources, collaborating with research institutions, and refining tools through pilot projects, FIRA and FINAGRO showed how parametric approaches and knowledge exchange can drive sustainable development practices in the agricultural sector.
